AKBAR-BIRBAL: COUNTING THE CROWS IN AGRA
From the Akbar-Birbal Classics, here is another one :
Akbar-Birbal : Counting the Crows in Agra!
On many occasions, people from many regions challenged Birbal in an effort to outsmart him in front of Emperor Akbar.
But nobody ever succeeded.Once a famous scholar visited the Mughal Court and challenged Birbal in the courtroom.
He asked Birbal to count the total number of crows in the whole city of Agra.
This task sounded weird and impossible to everyone in the courtroom, except Birbal,
who agreed to report with the total count of the crows the next morning.
No one believed this to be possible including Emperor Akbar and thought Birbal would make a fool of himself in front of the scholar the next day.
So on the next day,
everyone assembled in the court, waiting for what Birbal would answer.
The scholar was also present there eagerly waiting for his victory over Birbal.
He asked him “So Birbal, do you have your answer ready? How many crows are there in the city of Agra? “”I have the answer sir”, Birbal replied.
“The total number of crows in Agra is 78,299”, he said.
The scholar looked baffled and asked him how was he so sure about his answer.
Birbal replied “I have counted them personally sir, if you don’t believe, you can count them yourselves.”
The scholar knew Birbal was bluffing, so he asked him ” what if the number of crows turns out to be more or less than that? “
To that Birbal said ” If the number turns out to be more than the number I counted,
then that means some of the crows have got their relatives to visit Agra.
And if the number turns out to be less than what I have counted, then that means some of the crows from Agra have gone to visit their relatives in some other city.”
Within seconds, the Court echoed with the sound of laughter. The scholar realized,
Birbal had an answer ready for every question and that he had been unsuccessful in outsmarting him.
He was forced to admit his defeat and once again Emperor Akbar was pleased with Birbal’s witness and acknowledged him with 1000 gold coins as a gift.
