AKBAR-BIRBAL: THE MOST LIKED PROFESSION
From the Akbar-Birbal Classics, here is another one :
Akbar-Birbal : THE MOST LIKED PROFESSION!
One day, during an usual court hearing in Emperor Akbar’s court, Akbar asked his courtiers – “Which is the most liked profession in our city? “
After looking baffled for some time, the courtiers started randomly guessing different professions.
Akbar was not convinced by any of the guessed answers,
so he turned to Birbal and asked him for the most liked profession of the city.
To this Birbal replied ” The most liked profession is medicine your majesty.”
Akbar and the courtiers, knowing the city had very few physicians,
asked Birbal about how was he so sure with his statement and asked him to prove himself.
Birbal agreed and asked everyone to accompany him the next morning for the proof.
The next morning,
everyone gathered outside the palace waiting for Birbal to arrive.
Birbal showed up in a few minutes but with a big bandage around his right hand.
On seeing this, Emperor Akbar asked Birbal “What happened Birbal?
“To that Birbal replied “I accidentally cut my finger while slicing a tomato Jahanpanah.
I have one request, as I cannot write with an injured hand, can you help me by writing the names of all the physicians we meet today on our way?
“Akbar agreed and all proceeded towards the city along with all the courtiers including Birbal.
After a few minutes of walk, all of them arrived at one of the crowded markets of the city and sat on a charpoy in the marketplace as instructed by Birbal.
Within no time,
people noticed the Emperor and his courtiers and came to meet them.
Whenever someone would come closer to the courtiers, they would notice the big bandage on Birbal’s hand and asked him about what happened to his hand.
After knowing, everyone would advice him a few remedies for his injured hand.
Each time someone would offer Birbal some advice, he would ask the Emperor to write his name in the list.
Akbar was completely baffled each time and did not understand what Birbal was up to.
So after some time he ordered all the courtiers to return back to the palace.
On reaching back, Birbal asked for the list of the physicians that Akbar had noted at the market place.
Akbar returned the list with confusion on his face and asked about how was the list of all the people at the market place was the list of the physicians in the city.
To this Birbal replied
” Janhanpanah, these are all the people who came to us and offered me advice on my injured hand and acted as physicians.”
“This is the natural tendency of the people of our city of offer advice to people even when not asked to,
making the majority of them uneducated physicians”, Birbal said while chuckling.
Akbar understood what Birbal was trying to say and agreed that Birbal had outsmarted everyone in the courtroom.
The courtroom erupted with laughter within seconds and acknowledged Birble’s wit once again.
