” SPRING SHADOW “
This year, spring came without you.
I didn’t know how to feel about it,
so I ran from it.
I hadn’t seen my own knees,
bare in the sunlight
in such a long time,
hadn’t cared to be seen
by a world that went on without you
My breath came in gasping bursts,
a mouth that forgot how to eat anything
but gulps of air
The budding trees still looked stark
against the vivid emerald grass,
the fluffy and blue of the sky
I couldn’t imagine the leaves growing in,
filling up that empty space
where the sky fit just right
between the branches
So I ran, another stumbling shadow
in a world dripping light.
